Disasters impact far more profoundly than mere physical structures; their aftermath demands the reconstruction of communities, identities, and collective memory. Rebuilding a city following catastrophe involves confronting shared trauma and presents an opportunity for significant urban and societal restructuring. It calls upon architects, landscape architects, urban planners, and designers to thoughtfully engage with the complexities and unexpected insights born from crisis.
Our project is situated in Antakya, a city renowned for its historical and cultural depth, continuously inhabited from the Hellenistic Period to the present day. Antakya embodies an intricate urban tapestry shaped by multiple civilizations and layered narratives. Through rigorous research into the city’s cultural heritage, socio-economic context, and historical continuity, along with comprehensive analyses of global precedents in post-disaster urban recovery, our design emerged as a considered response to complex urban challenges.
Studio NeoGe was privileged to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders and community members, enabling us to create an inclusive, secure, and meaningful environment. Our ambition was to foster spaces that support community resilience, facilitate social interaction, and reinforce a collective sense of belonging and identity.
